MERRICKS BEACH: Coastal Garden

Andrew Laidlaw designed this half acre front-line coastal garden and we undertook its construction in 2009. The newly constructed house and garden are on a very steep site on the cliff of Balnarring Beach and lack of access meant that materials such as soil and mulch had to be pumped in. The heavy clay soil required much preparation.

The tiered garden features red gum steps and pathway down to the beach. Due to its proximity to the beach, sensitive planting had to be considered and a mix of indigenous, native and Mediterranean plants were used, together with a small area for a productive vegie garden. This garden has been featured in ‘Green Living Magazine’.
